Moving from state to state

Moving home is exciting, exhausting and expensive! When you’re moving from one state to another, there are extra considerations to make the process as stress-free as possible. We’ve put together a few tips to help.
Research the area
If you’re moving to a new state, you’ll want to know all about the area you are moving to. What are the schools like? How easy is it to get around? This is a personal thing which could be influenced by any number of factors including your hobbies, faith, and lifestyle. If you like to eat out, a town with lots of restaurants will be attractive, or if you’re a gym bunny you’ll want to be close to excellent training facilities. You also need to think about jobs – do you plan to find a new job when you move? You might want to start job-hunting before you move.
Find the right real estate agent
A great real estate agent will make your home-buying experience as seamless as possible. You need someone at the other end who can arrange remote viewings or shortlist suitable properties on your behalf so you don’t end up wasting time and money travelling for fruitless viewings.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, remote viewings are commonplace, so your estate agent should be used to doing things virtually. You can find more information about buying a home during the COVID-19 pandemic here.
Find the right lender for your relocation mortgage
Some lenders specialise in relocation mortgages. Having an expert to guide you will make buying a home in a different state a breeze. Here at iLENDi, we work with a relocation mortgage specialist so we know the extra value they bring.
Make a checklist
Having a checklist of all the things you need to take care of prevents it from becoming overwhelming. There’s lots you’ll need to remember before, during and after the move like forwarding your mail, setting up your utilities, registering your car, transferring your license, and notifying just about everyone of your address change.
Pack like a pro
Don’t leave it till the last minute. Set a (realistic) timeline to get your possessions packed and ready. This will give you time to sort through your things, donate anything you don’t need, wrap your treasures properly, and make loading and unloading easier on both sides. Pack your non-essentials first, save essentials till last and keep documentation together in a separate box. Label everything!
Moving companies
It is important to shop around for the best moving company, especially when moving long distances. As well as the cost of the moving company, it is worth thinking seriously about what you need to take with you. You don’t have to go full Marie Kondo, but if you intend to buy a new couch for your new place anyway, there’s no point paying to take the old one with you.
You can also save yourself money by renting a van and moving things yourself, or even call in some favours from family and friends. For long-distance moves, it may be more cost-effective to rent a freight truck than a moving company.
